The 12-meter ham radio band frequencies range from 24.890 MHz to 24.990 MHz, a 100 kHz segment of the High Frequency (HF) spectrum, often called a "gentleman's band" and is great for casual chats and DX (long distance) during daylight or peak sunspot conditions, used for CW, phone (SSB), and digital modes like FT8, requiring General, Advanced, or Extra licenses in the US.
Key Frequencies & Modes:
  • 24.890 - 24.930 MHz: Primarily CW (Morse Code) and narrow-band digital (like RTTY, Packet), with specific digital segments like 24.920-24.925 MHz for RTTY and 24.925-24.930 MHz for Packet.
  • 24.930 - 24.990 MHz: Used for SSB (voice), CW, and Image communications, with SSB calling frequency around 24.950 MHz.
Band Characteristics:
  • WARC Band: It's one of the World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC) bands, meaning it's generally contest-free, making it quieter for casual operators.
  • Propagation: Similar to the 10-meter band, it's best during daytime, especially around solar maximums, but can offer night DX openings.
License Requirements (US):
  • You need a General, Advanced, or Extra Class license; Technician licensees do not have access to this band.
