RL Drake L-4B HF Linear Amplifier in Original & Excellent Condition S/N 2277

This vintage Amplifier was made in the 1970s and I tested it and described what I found.

This RL Drake L-4B HF Linear Amplifier is all Original and in Excellent Condition.

 This one is Serial Number  2277. It covers 10-80 Meters

This amplifier is super clean inside and out. the front Panel is free from any bad marks or scratches.

 The RF Deck cabinet is also very nice with only a few light marks. 

 The power supply cabinet is  in great shape as well, and it is also all original.

The RF Deck has the original Eimac 3-500Z Amplifier Tubes which appear to be full or near full output.

 I briefly tested this amplifier on 80 meters and loaded it up to 800 Watts Key Down in the Low Voltage CW position. I then switched to the High Voltage SSB position and saw over 1200 Watts speaking into the microphone on my test radio.

 I also inspected the band switch and tuning capacitor and there are no burnt or broken contacts. 

The capacitor plates are in perfect shape.

 Due to the power supply having the original Electrolytic Capacitors, I kept the testing short.

 The original capacitors are about 53 years old and really should be replaced before this amplifier is put into continuous service. They seem to be okay and I saw no problems but you never know for sure when one or more may fail.   

There are Capacitor Kits Available from Harbach Electronics that are reasonably priced.

 I am selling this Vintage Amplifier as is, as described for the family of a silent key.

Due to the difficulty packing and shipping three separate boxes, I cannot accept a return for this item.

I will provide a first generation copy of the manual.

I am very proficient packing heavy electronic gear, and use the proper cartons and packing materials to insure safe shipment.

   This Amplifier needs to be shipped in three different cartons. The RF deck, Power Supply and the Tubes with chimneys all need to be separate. The shipping quote reflects this.

The Drake L-4B has 1000 watts PEP power input on AM, CW and RTTY and 2000 watts input on SSB. It covers 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters (10 meters not available on late production). The high efficiency Class B Grounded Grid Circuit uses the new Eimac 3-500Z zero bias triodes. Power requirements are 115 VAC 50-60 Hz 30 amps or 230 VAC 50-60 Hz 15 amps. The included L-4 PS power supply (not shown) is in a separate enclosure. This amp features a quiet blower. There is a built in wattmeter calibrated at 300/3000 watts forward and 300 watts reflected.

The L-4B matches the TR-4, T-4, T-4X series.
