Description

Barker & Williamson (B&W) Large Band Coil Model 51-380 for 8 to 12 MC Center Link, in Excellent Condition #1

The Center Link is intact but has been cut out of the circuit and the two related banana connectors removed.

I will include two of the banana connectors so you can wire back in the center link.

The B&W JEL Series (Barker & Williamson Junior series, often labeled as "JEL" for Junior type with link or similar designation) consists of vintage plug-in air-wound inductors (coils) from the mid-20th century. These were designed for amateur radio (ham) transmitters, receivers, or tank circuits, particularly in lower-power applications like oscillator, buffer, or final stages. They feature ceramic bases, banana plugs for easy band switching, air-core windings with tinned copper wire, and typically include a link winding for coupling/matching.The JEL series is part of B&W's "Junior" line (similar to JVL, JCL, etc.), which were smaller/lower-power variants compared to heavier-duty lines like BVL (Bandspread Variable Link), TVL, HDVL, or BCL. They were commonly used in homebrew or vintage gear for HF bands, with conservative power ratings (e.g., Type "B" up to ~100W in oscillator/buffer stages per related B&W docs; actual limits depend on cooling, voltage, and application).Known Models in the JEL SeriesFrom vintage sales listings (eBay, Worthpoint, ham radio sites), ham builder projects (e.g., QSL.net references to JEL-style coils for multi-band finals), and collector references, the series covers standard amateur bands with the band number in meters prefixed (e.g., "40 JEL" for 40 meters). The full official catalog list isn't digitized publicly (B&W's current site focuses on modern Miniductor/Airdux stock), but documented/existing examples include:
  • 6 JEL — Appears frequently in listings; likely for 6-meter band (50-54 MHz) or a specialized short/low-inductance coil (e.g., VHF or harmonic use). Often sold as used or NOS.
  • 40 JEL — For 40-meter band (7.0-7.3 MHz). Commonly referenced, including NOS in original boxes (e.g., Stock No. 3104).
  • Other probable/likely variants (based on patterns in Junior series like JCL/JVL and ham usage):
    • 80 JEL or similar for 80-meter band (3.5-4.0 MHz).
    • 20 JEL for 20-meter band (14 MHz).
    • 10 JEL or 15 JEL for higher bands (though higher bands more often used JVL or TVL types).
    • Possibly 160 JEL for 160 meters (1.8-2.0 MHz), though rarer as lower bands favored larger coils.
Multi-band setups often used a set of JEL coils (e.g., for 160-10m finals in projects like "The Longfeller Transmitter"). The "E" in JEL likely denotes "End-link" or similar fixed/variable link coupling, akin to JVL's "Junior Variable Link."General Information on JEL Series Coils
  • Construction: Air-wound on ceramic form/base with banana plug terminals. High Q, good mechanical stability; link coil for antenna/tank coupling.
  • Purpose: Band-changing in plug-in coil sockets for multi-band operation. Suited for oscillator/buffer-doubler stages or low-to-medium power finals.
  • Power Handling: Typically lower-power "Junior" rating (up to ~100W in Type "B" per analogous B&W literature; not for high-power finals without derating).
  • Features: Compact size, easy plug-in swap; some with adjustable or fixed links for impedance matching (e.g., to 50-600 ohms in related types).
