Description
Barker & Williamson (B&W) Set of 3 MCL Coils , MCL 20, MCL 40 & MCL 80, in Very Good Condition
This coil set is in very good! All are solid. They are the same as the MEL coils but are center linked as opposed to end link.
The Barker & Williamson (B&W) MCL coil set appears to be a rare or possibly non-standard designation in the vintage plug-in air-wound inductor lineup from the mid-20th century (1940s–1960s). Extensive searches across ham radio catalogs, eBay archives, vintage manuals, and B&W's current site (bwantennas.com) do not yield direct references to an "MCL" series as a distinct product line like TVL (Transmitting Variable Link), JVL (Junior Variable Link), BVL, MEL, BCL, or HDVL.B&W's vintage plug-in coils (often called "Air Inductors") were typically band-specific (e.g., 10m, 20m, 40m, 80m) with plug-in ceramic bases, tinned copper windings in rigid plastic rib supports for high Q/efficiency, mechanical stability, and moderate power ratings (100–300W typical). These were used in transmitting applications like tank coils, pi-networks, link-coupled tuners, or exciters for band-switching in classic ham gear.Possible interpretations for "MCL":
- It may be a typo/misreading/variant of similar codes like MEL (fixed-link "Mel" type air inductors, common in estates) or BCL (another fixed-type variant).
- In rare vintage contexts (e.g., old ads or estate pieces), labels like "MCL" occasionally appear as custom/markings on fixed-link or center-tapped coils (e.g., similar to TCL/TVL for center-tapped/variable link), but no dedicated MCL series is documented.
- If "MCL" refers to a specific model (e.g., "10 MCL" for 10-meter), it aligns with fixed primary designs without adjustable links, optimized for direct tank use.
