Description
Collins 75A-4 Receiver with 4:1 Tuning Knob, (3) New Dave Curry Filters, New Tubes, Capacitors, & Alignment Late S/N 003
This receiver belongs to a close friend of mine Paul Kluwe.
He built his Collection of Collins gear over several years looking for the highest serial numbers, and only in excellent condition.
This receiver however, is a very low serial number 003 and is in excellent condition. This Earliest known 75A-5 receiver was purchased from the estate of a Collins employee who did advance technical testing and worked for Collins for 27 year.
As a result of him working for Collins, he was able to, and did all the factory updates and service bulletins to this receiver. So it has all the factory updates done at the Collins facility in Cedar Rapids IA. It is as up to date as the latest serial number 75A4s.
The Collins Employee's Wife made it a point to say that he purchased this 75A-4 when they were newlyweds and that they could not afford it! You can imagine that dynamic! $700.00 back then would buy you a car.
But she said they had a long wonderful marriage, and he had a long career working for Collins.
To my knowledge this is the earliest known 75A-4. It was common for employees to purchase gear when it was introduced. It is likely serial numbers 1 and 2 may also have been purchased by emplyees.
In October of 2020, Paul installed (3) Dave Curry Filters, Replaced the tubes with Mil Spec JAN tubes, and replaced the capacitors.
This receiver has:
The 4:1 Reduction drive and Spinner Knob
(3) Brand New David Curry (Rockwell Collins Mechanical filters) installed. 300 hZ, CW, 2.1 SSB, and the 6 KC AM filters
Original Collins Mechanical Crystal filters are failing due to the age and materials used at the time which are breaking down.
A New complete Tube Kit has been purchased from Frank Krize, and installed.
The critical Electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with new high quality capacitors.
A 3 Conductor Power Cord has been installed to make the receiver safe and up to today's electrical standards.
The receiver has been aligned by my friend Paul, who has a PHD in Electronics and is a very accomplished Technician.
The cost of the Curry Filters is $675.00
The cost of the Tube Kit is $165.00 Delivered
I am sure a complete alignment would cost about $250.00
Total Cost of updates $1090.00
While my price is at the top of the curve, when you consider all the necessary work is done, and the new filters, This plug and play receiver is well worth the asking price.
I double checked the operation. Everything appears to be working great.
I will include a Copy of the manual at no charge. If you are interested in an original manual, Please contact me at the time of purchase.
Also included, is the type of packing and shipping you cannot get from a packaging service. I have been packing and shipping heavy vintage Radio gear for 30 years and I buy the special boxes and material needed to assure this receiver will arrive undamaged. This also includes private insurance which is far superior to what Fed Ex of UPS provides.
I also have the matching 312A-1 Lighted speaker for sale in another listing.
