Description
Turner SSB + 2 Vintage Transistorized Desk Microphone in Very Good to Excellent Condition with Amplified Punchy SSB Audio
I have tested this mic and it really sounds great!
Turner SSB+2 transistorized desk microphone in very good to excellent condition with minimal marks and clean original cosmetics.
This highly regarded 1960s–1970s amplified microphone features a two-stage transistor preamp powered by a 9V battery, giving it excellent output and adjustable gain for outstanding modulation on SSB.
The ceramic element provides punchy, articulate audio that hams and CB operators have loved for decades — perfect for cutting through noise and getting great signal reports. The heavy die-cast base includes a convenient press-to-talk switch and a professional communications look that pairs beautifully with classic transceivers.
Fully tested and working perfectly with a 9 Volt battery. A true classic for any vintage ham radio station or CB base setup. Much sought after for its reliable performance and “talk power.”Includes the original cable and connector with stereo Rin, Tip & Sleeve connector. Ready to put on the air and sound great.
- Brand/Model: Turner SSB+2 (also known as Turner SSB Plus 2 or Turner +2 SSB)
- Type: Transistorized (amplified) ceramic desk microphone with two-stage silicon transistor preamp
- Power: Single 9V battery (battery life is typically very long; easy to replace)
- Impedance: High impedance output with built-in amplification — excellent match for vintage tube rigs, SSB transceivers, and many CB/ham radios
- Frequency Response: Approximately 300–3000 Hz (tailored for clear voice communications with good punch on SSB)
- Features: Adjustable gain control on the back, press-to-talk (PTT) switch on the base, omnidirectional ceramic element, heavy die-cast metal stand and housing
- Audio Reputation: Known for punchy, clean, articulate SSB audio with strong “talk power.” Hams and CBers often praise it for cutting through pile-ups and delivering excellent modulation reports without sounding harsh.
- Vintage Era: Popular in the late 1960s through 1970s for ham radio and CB base stations
Here's the best available information on the Turner SSB+2 (also called Turner SSB Plus 2 or +2 SSB) transistorized amplified desk microphone wiring and internals. The SSB+2 is a battery-powered (single 9V) amplified ceramic microphone with a two-transistor (or Darlington equivalent) preamp and an adjustable gain control. It supports both relay switching and electronic switching via a small slide switch on the bottom of the base.Typical Wire Colors and Functions (Most Common Configuration)Most Turner SSB+2 desk mics use a 4- or 5-wire cable with these standard colors:

(This shows wire colors like yellow, brown, green, blue, black, orange, and connections for the pot board, PTT, and output.)YouTube videos that are useful:
- White — Microphone audio output (hot signal from the amplified element)
- Shield (bare or foil around the audio wire) — Audio ground / common ground
- Red — Push-to-Talk (PTT) / Transmit switching (grounds when PTT is pressed)
- Black — PTT ground / switching common (sometimes used as the return for relay switching)
- Yellow or Brown (if present, often in 5-wire versions) — Receive switching or unused (frequently tied to shield/ground or left disconnected)
- Pin 1: White (Audio)
- Pin 2: Shield (Ground)
- Pin 3: Red (PTT / Transmit)
- Pin 4: Black (PTT ground) or sometimes left open depending on the radio
- White → Pin 1 (Mic Audio)
- Shield → Pin 2 or 4 (Ground)
- Red → Pin 3 (PTT)
- Black → Pin 4 or jumpered as needed
- The ceramic element connects to the preamp board.
- The preamp (powered by 9V battery) boosts the signal and feeds it to the white audio wire.
- The PTT switch (on the base) handles transmit/receive switching.
- Gain control (potentiometer, usually accessible from the back or bottom) adjusts output level.
- The switch has positions for relay (mechanical) or electronic (solid-state keying) operation.
