Description

Collins 70E-8 Permeability Tuned Oscillator (PTO) & 305H-2 Mounting Chassis for 310 Series Exciters NOS

This set was sold by Collins for Amateurs to build up there own exciter.

This one at some point had the dial glass/frequency glass damaged, and there is a crack in it, Probably from shipping.

All the other parts are like new and undamaged, and I am selling this unit for parts or repair.

There is a table top size blue print and mounting blue print originals from Collins.

Collins 70E-8 PTO & 305H-2 Combination with Blueprints – Classic Homebrew VFO!Rare Collins 70E-8 Permeability Tuned Oscillator (PTO) paired with 305H-2 assembly. Includes original tuning knob, dial mechanism, and factory blueprints/documentation. This high-stability PTO was supplied by Collins for serious homebrew VFO and exciter builds in the late 1940s/early 1950s—legendary for minimal drift and precise 10-turn tuning.Perfect for restoring or building custom transmitters, pairing with amplifiers, or adding to a Collins collection. Complete and appears ready for integration.

The Collins 70E-8 is a Permeability Tuned Oscillator (PTO) from the late 1940s, used primarily in Collins' early amateur and commercial exciters like the 310 series (e.g., 310A, 310B, 310C). It provides exceptional frequency stability for its era through a precision mechanical permeability tuning design (a moving ferrite slug in a specially wound coil). Key Details
  • Tuning: Typically covers a 1 MHz range (often around 1.6–2.6 MHz or similar, depending on exact configuration) over exactly 10 turns of the shaft, with a calibrated dial for ham bands (80–10 meters when used in exciters).
  • Reputation: Legendary for low drift and linearity, making it highly prized by vintage radio enthusiasts. The 70E-8 (and 70E-8A variant) was a foundational PTO in Collins' postwar amateur line.

Collins sold or supplied the 70E-8 PTO (often with associated hardware and documentation) specifically for homebrew/experimenter use. It was commonly paired with power supplies and used in the 310-series exciters marketed as standalone or add-on units for custom transmitters (e.g., driving higher-power amplifiers like the 30K-1). The combination with the 305H-2 (likely a mounting chassis, assembly), tuning knob, dial, and blueprints aligns perfectly with factory-supported homebrew VFO/PTO projects common in the 1940s–1950s.
