This Collins KW-1 Transmitter was Owned by my friend Jim Jorgensen "K9RJ"
After Jim's Passing, it was sold, and another friend eventually purchased it and has been using it as recent as six months ago.
Recently this transmitter has been gone through and has new tubes installed as well as a Peter Dahl Modulation transformer. This eliminates the problems of the original Mod Transformers which were susceptible to Failure.
This particular transmitter is serial #9.
It is in beautiful condition and was working great before it was taken out of service.
This KW-1 Can be picked up where I live in NE Wisconsin and I may be able to deliver it within a reasonable distance for the expense of delivery costs.

- Introduction: 1952 (some sources note 1950 design start), original price $3,850 — equivalent to roughly two new Ford sedans at the time.
- Production: Only 150 units + 2 prototypes were ever built. Nearly all are accounted for today (only about 16 are unlocated), making it one of the rarest Collins “black box” amateur transmitters.

- Design: VFO-controlled (stable hermetically sealed 70E-14 PTO), gang-tuned, single-knob bandswitching for all stages. It covers 160–10 meters (500 W input on 160 m, full 1,000 W on 80–10 m). Plate-modulated AM with excellent audio and built-in low-pass filtering to reduce TVI.
- Size & Weight: Massive — approximately 66½" high × 28" wide × 18" deep, weighing 600 lbs (including built-in power supply). It’s a grey wrinkle-finish cabinet that takes up serious floor space.
- Tube lineup (main highlights): Two 4-250A in the final amplifier, two 810 modulators, plus a complement of smaller tubes for exciter, speech amp, and rectifiers (872A high-voltage rectifiers, etc.).
- Power requirements: 115/230 V single-phase (needs a proper 230 V 3-wire circuit for full operation).
- Features: Built-in VFO, multiple metering, overload protection, speech clipping, and very clean RF output (52 Ω, low SWR tolerance).
- 1000 watts input on 80-10m (500W on 160m)
- Built-in VFO (stable PTO), bandswitching, and gang-tuned exciter/PA
- Excellent audio with speech clipper and low-pass filters
