Description
Drake MS-4 Original Speaker with Cable to Mount in MS-4 Cabinet
This speaker was removed from an MS-4 cabinet that had some cosmetic damage.
The speaker is in excellent shape with the cable, and sounds great.
The Drake MS-4 speaker cabinet (introduced ~1965 for the Drake 4-line gear like the R-4 series receivers and TR-4 transceivers) uses a stock 5" x 7" elliptical (oval) permanent magnet dynamic (moving-coil / PMD) loudspeaker.
This is the original driver Drake installed inside the all-metal cabinet. It is not branded with a specific third-party manufacturer name or part number (common for 1960s OEM speakers of this era). Key specs from Drake documentation, RigPix, eHam reviews, and ham radio service notes:
- Size: 5" × 7" elliptical (oval frame)
- Impedance: 4 ohms (official spec; some user DMM readings on aged units show ~7–8 Ω due to voice-coil aging, but the design target is 4 Ω to match Drake transceivers/receivers)
- Magnet: Ceramic / alnico-style “heavy magnet” design for the period (original weight ≈ 13.7 oz / 388 g; much lighter than modern 5×7" replacements, which often exceed 28 oz)
- Type: Permanent magnet dynamic, open-back mounting in the MS-4 cabinet (no enclosure behind the speaker itself)
- Purpose: Provides the “classic warm Drake audio” sound when paired with the R-4 / TR-4 series; the metal cabinet and perforated grill give it a distinctive tone
