Description
Morse Code Practice Set 1930s Vintage with Speed-x Straight key, Speed-x Sounder & Eveready 4 1/2 Volt "C" Model 771 Battery, All in Excellent Condition.
The original 1931 battery on this unit does not have a charge, but I hooked up 5 Volts DC and the key and sounder work great.
This is a charming vintage Morse code practice set, likely from the 1930s–1940s era, featuring a Speed-X (E.F. Johnson or related Les Logan/Nye lineage) straight key and matching sounder/buzzer on a custom wooden base, paired with a period-correct Eveready No. 771 4½-volt "C" battery (dated 10/23/31) and a Bud Radio International Morse Code chart.
Key Components & Appeal
- Speed-X Straight Key & Sounder: Speed-X keys (often E.F. Johnson Model 450 practice sets or similar) were popular, affordable tools for learning CW (Morse code) in the ham radio and telegraph era. The black-base key with large knob and the sounder are classic. These were designed for simple battery-powered practice without needing a full station.
- Eveready No. 771 Battery: Original 4.5V "C" battery for radio/telegraph use, with excellent 1931 date stamp and graphics. These are highly collectible for battery radio displays or period setups (originals are non-functional now but great for display).
- Bud Radio Chart: Nice complementary advertising piece from Bud Radio, Inc. (Cleveland, OH).
- Wooden Platform: Adds a neat, mounted display quality—common for homebrew or school practice sets.
