The Yaesu VX-170 is a rugged, waterproof 2-meter (144 MHz) VHF FM handheld transceiver (HT) introduced in the mid-2000s. It offers 5W output power, 1,000 alphanumeric memory channels, CTCSS/DCS tone squelch, a large easy-to-read display, loud clear audio, and excellent battery life with the 1,400 mAh FNB-83 NiMH pack. It shares the tough “hammer-like” chassis of the earlier VX-150 but adds waterproofing and more memories. It is simple to program, very durable, and remains popular among hams for portable use, emergency comms, and repeater work. It is a discontinued model but still highly rated in reviews for reliability and build quality.
