Description

E.F. Johnson 229-201 Roller Inductor – 1.5 to 11.5 µH with Ceramic Coil Form in Excellent Condition

E.F. Johnson 229-201 Roller Inductor – 1.5 to 11.5 µH Genuine E.F. Johnson model 229-201 (also marked 229-201-5) variable roller inductor. Measured inductance range 1.5–11.5 µH (catalog nominal 10 µH).

Features ceramic coil form and side plates, ¼″ shaft, and classic open-frame construction. Dimensions approximately 4⅝″ long × 2½″ wide × 3″ high. Rated 3 A with 14 AWG wire and 17 turns. Excellent for HF antenna tuners, Viking transmitters, or matching networks. Smooth roller action when cleaned. A compact, high-quality classic for your amateur radio project.

This is a classic compact variable roller inductor from the E.F. Johnson catalog (often associated with Cardwell, Multronics, or military/commercial use under NSN 5950-00-510-1743). It was commonly used in Viking series transmitters, antenna tuners, and low-to-medium power HF matching networks.

Official Specs & Information From the E.F. Johnson catalog (#978) and current dealer data:
  • Nominal inductance: 10 µH (your measured range of 1.5–11.5 µH is typical for the continuous roller adjustment)
  • Current rating: 3 A
  • Wire: 14 AWG
  • Turns: 17
  • Coil form: Ceramic (hollow/ceramic form with ceramic side plates)
  • Shaft: ¼″ diameter × ~⅜″ long
  • Dimensions (catalog/dealer): Approx. 4⅜″–4¹³⁄₃₂″ long × 2½″ wide × ~3″ high (matches your 4⅝″ L × 2½″ W × 3″ H measurement)
  • Mounting: Two unthreaded holes, centers ~3.812″
  • Construction: Open frame, roller contact on silver-plated or tinned copper turns
It is a high-Q air-core design suitable for HF (especially 80–10 meters in antenna tuners or amplifiers at moderate power levels). Power handling is typically a few hundred watts depending on frequency and duty cycle (the 3 A rating is the limiting factor).
