Description

This RME MC-53  2, 6, & 10 Meter Receive Converter For Automobile Radio is super rare.

It is in nice shape and untested. I am selling it as is, as described.

RME MC-53 is a rare 1950s (circa 1953–1955) vintage mobile receive converter made by Radio Manufacturing Engineers (RME, later part of Electro-Voice). It was designed specifically for amateur radio enthusiasts to add 2-meter (144 MHz), 6-meter (50 MHz), and 10-meter (28 MHz, sometimes noted as 10-11m) VHF/HF reception to a standard broadcast (AM) automobile radio.

Key Specifications and Features
  • Bands Covered: 2m (approx. 143.5–149 MHz), 6m (49.5–54.5 MHz), 10-11m (26.5–30 MHz). Individual 75 ohm coaxial inputs per band.

  • Output/IF: Converts signals to approximately 1550 kHz (1.55 MHz) for tuning on a standard car radio's broadcast band.

  • Power: Typically 6V or 12V automotive systems (vintage mobile setup); includes tubes (e.g., mentions of 6AL5 in related ads).
  • Controls/Features: Multi-band selector, analog tuning/S-meter, heavy steel cabinet, attached wiring harness for mobile installation. High gain (advertised ~25 dB average in period ads).

  • Design: Compact for under-dash or mobile mounting. Uses vacuum tubes (era-appropriate).
It was promoted in QST magazine ads around 1953–1954 as a unique 3-band mobile converter. Original new price in the mid-1950s was around $60–$70
