Description
RF Parts Branded Matched Pair of 3-500ZG Power Amplifier Tubes New in the Original Boxes 1998 Date Codes
This pair of Premium RF Parts 3-500ZG tubes were tested when they were received by them from the manufacturing plant in China.
They were purchased new from RF Parts in 1998 and were never opened or used.
RF Parts brands and extensively tests/burns-in these tubes at their facility. They are a popular, cost-effective choice with good reliability reputation for amateur service. Serial numbers (98xxxx) Indicate they were made in the late 1990s When they were known to be high quality before cost cutting and short cuts produced inferior products.
I opened the boxes myself and tested them in an Ameritron AL-80 Amplifier, and each has full emission.
The RF Parts 3-500ZG is a modern Chinese-manufactured graphite-plate version of the classic 3-500Z high-μ power triode. The "G" denotes the graphite anode, which offers better heat handling and overload tolerance compared to older metal-plate 3-500Z tubes.
Key Specifications (same core family as Eimac 3-500Z)

- Type: High-mu power triode (μ ≈ 130)
- Filament: 5.0 V, 14.5–14.6 A
- Plate Dissipation: 500 W
- Max Plate Voltage: Up to 4000 V (typical operation ~3000 V in amateur amps)
- Operation: Zero-bias Class AB2 linear (grounded-grid, very popular)
- Uses: Direct drop-in for Ameritron AL-80(A/B), Heath SB-220, TL-922, and similar HF amplifiers. Excellent for SSB/CW.
My test results are solid and consistent with expected performance for this tube in new condition. The AL-80 series (single 3-500Z) is typically rated for ~800–1000 W PEP SSB output with proper drive/tuning, and 500–700 W carrier/CW is typical depending on Drive, line voltage, loading, and frequency.
